Abstract

Background: To review firearm deaths in female victims reported to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Khyber Medical College, Peshawar, Pakistan.

Methods: Retrospective chart review was conducted on female victims of firearm deaths out of the total medico-legal post-mortems performed at Forensic Medicine Department from January - December 2018. These cases were identified on the basis of police inquest and post-mortem findings as firearm. Deaths due to non- firearm injuries and reasons was excluded.

Results: 90 cases were identified as firearm out of a total of 157 cases which constitutes 57.3%. Head & Neck was the main target area (49%) followed by chest (33%). 62% of the victims aged between 21-40 years. The maximum figure of firearm deaths happened during May.

Conclusions: Young females are more prone to firearm injuries, head & neck is the main target area of the body. Maximum cases were from rural areas and May is the month with maximum number of cases.
