Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Millions of people suffer from malaria across the globe throughout year. Plasmodium vivax malaria is the leading cause of malaria. Malaria is seldom fatal disease as it used to be, but it still causes significant morbidity. Haematological complications are quite common in patients suffering from both vivax and falciparum malaria.

Objective:  Objectives of this study were to determine the frequency of haematological complications in patients suffering from vivax and falciparum malaria.

Material and methods:  After getting approval from the hospital E&RC, all the patients above >14 years who presented with malaria, were included in the study. Blood was collected from the patients for malarial parasite. Malaria was diagnosed on the basis of thick stain while subtype vivax malaria on the basis of thin stain. All the data was collected on the purposefully predesigned proforma.

Results:  A total of 350 patients were included in the study, 250 patients (71.4%) were males while 100 patients (28.6%) were females. Mean age was 55.1 years.  The most common haematological complications in our patients suffering from malaria are Thrombocytopenia  69%, anemia in 65%, Leukopenia 39.14%, Neutrophilia in 29.14% and Lymphopoenia in 31.71% .

Conclusion: Thrombocytopenia in 69%, anemia in 65%, Leukopenia 39.14%, Neutrophilia in 29.14% and Lymphopoenia in 31.71% were present in our patients with malaria.

Key words: Haematological complications, malaria.
